A Year of Discovery, Creativity, and Confidence
At Maple Class, Year 5 is a vibrant and enriching journey where learning really leaps off the page and into the world around us. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence, offering a wide range of academic, artistic, and physical experiences that help every child flourish, no matter what their talent or skill.
Please see a small snippet below of what we are about:
📚 A Rich and Diverse Curriculum
We are immersed in a broad and balanced curriculum that brings learning to life:
- Literacy: From whole-class texts like Holes to the dramatic retelling of the picture book Queen of the Falls, literature is at the heart of our learning. Drama is a powerful tool in our classroom, sparking imagination and deepening understanding.
- Humanities: We explore fascinating topics such as The Ancient Maya, South Africa, World War I, and Elizabethan England, helping us connect with the past and understand the world today.
- Science: Topics like Earth and Space ignite wonder and curiosity, while hands-on investigations build scientific thinking. The Wonderdome also came to school to bring that extra awe and wonder!
- Languages: French is taught throughout the year, alongside introductions to six other languages through our Language of the Term initiative which gives us a taster of further languages used across the globe.
🎭 Creativity and Expression
- Drama & Oracy: Whether performing monologues, leading Collective Worship, or delivering Mass, our pupils grow into confident, articulate speakers.
- Art & DT: From cooking Great British Dishes, drawing portraits to crafting Tote Bags and Cam Toys, creativity flourishes in every term through this firm favourite subject.
- Music: We enjoy playing instruments, participating in The Big Sing, and developing a lifelong love of music in our engaging music lessons.
🏕️ Enriching Experiences
We believe learning should be memorable and meaningful:
- The Christmas Dinner Lesson: A magical December tradition where we read A Christmas Carol and bring Victorian festivities to life to write a persuasive letter to get Scrooge to join his nephew Fred and his family for Christmas dinner.
- Overnight School Camp & Southwold Beach Trip: A highlight of the year, combining adventure, teamwork, and fun followed by a day basking on the beach to make the most of our local scenic coastline.
- Forest School: Every Tuesday morning, our outdoor classroom fosters resilience, curiosity, and a love for nature. This is truly the place where we have some our most memorable experiences which we treasure.
- UK Parliament: A trip to The Houses of Parliament really opened our minds to what happens beyond our school gates in this important and busy landmark of Great Britain.
🏅 Sports and Physical Development
Physical activity is a key part of our week:
- A great sporting start: Swimming and gymnastics build strength and confidence at the start of Year 5.
- Throughout the Year: Tennis, cricket, rounders, netball and athletics keep us active and engaged and there are tournaments at other schools which we can participate in.
- Swimming Gala: This was another chance to shine and celebrate our progress in the pool.
💻 Computing and Digital Skills
Our computing curriculum is both creative and technical as well as a firm favourite:
- 3D Design, Micro-bit and Video Programming allow us to become digital creators, not just consumers.
💬 Personal Growth and Wellbeing
- PSHE: We nurture a safe space to explore feelings, values, and relationships as well as learn about our physical and emotional development.
- Oracy Skills: Embedded across the curriculum, helping us become thoughtful listeners and confident communicators.
- Courageous Advocates and a sense of pride in what we do: We relish our ‘Show-and-Tell’ sessions to highlight things that are important to us, present our talents, share experiences or raise awareness about something we are passionate about.
Ultimately. Maple Class is a place where we are encouraged to explore, express, and excel. With a curriculum full of wonder and a classroom full of joy, Year 5 is a year to remember.
